Who Was Ernie Kaulbach
Ernest W. “Ernie” Kaulbach was a retired Bridgeport industrialist and philanthropist. Born in Long Island in 1912, he moved to Bridgeport in 1933 and worked hard in the place he called home. In 1945, he started the Park City Supply Co., a wholesale distributor of industrial pipe, valves and fittings, long considered a leader in the industry.
When not managing his successful regional business, Ernie loved to play golf. He was a member of the President Country Club of West Palm Beach, FL and Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield, CT. In 1985, his love for golf and charitable giving inspired him to establish the Ernie Kaulbach Pro-Am Golf Classic. Initially the Golf Classic was a benefit for the Ahlbin Rehabilitation Centers at Bridgeport Hospital. Since his death in 1997, the golf classic has supported oncology services at Bridgeport Hospital. Ernie grew very fond of the nurses who cared for him during the illness that took his life and wanted to be sure they and other caregivers had the resources they needed to care for cancer patients effectively.
In addition to his support of the oncology program, Bridgeport Hospital named its Parking Pavilion after Ernie and his wife Agnes in honor of their longtime generosity.
Ernie Kaulbach was much beloved and is much missed. His legacy of philanthropy lives on at Bridgeport Hospital and in the many other charitable organizations still supported by the Agnes W. and Ernest W. Kaulbach Foundation.
