The Dr. Tom Kennedy Toy Closet Program

The Dr. Tom Kennedy Toy Closet Program was created with the help of our Child Life Department to provide new, age-appropriate and educational toys for pediatric patients. More than simply fun, play is an important part in the development and growth of a child. Through play activities, children actively participate in the learning process and gain a greater understanding of medical procedures. The children are also able to work through and express the emotions they have about their stay in the hospital.

A toy may seem like a small gift, but here in the P.T. Barnum Pediatric Center it serves a very distinct purpose. The toys from the Dr. Tom Kennedy Toy Closet are frequently used to provide distraction during all types of medical procedures. For example, since Bridgeport Hospital is the only burn center in the State of Connecticut, many children with burn injuries often stay in the Pediatric Unit. These children endure various burn-related procedures that can often be frightening and uncomfortable. Toys given to these children act as a distraction, a reward or a motivator for needed therapy as well as a source of happiness.

In addition, toys are often given as gifts for special occasions - such as birthdays and holiday celebrations - or when a child needs a little extra encouragement to get him or her through a rough spot during their recovery.
